It’s February and it’s the month of love! In the spirit of inclusivity, Valentine’s at Double Image this year is all about the significant relationships in your life.

Last week, I was driving to meet some good friends, one of whom I haven’t seen since before the pandemic (2 years of gossip to catch up on!) the and I heard that Sara Cox on Radio 2 is celebrating singles this February (single people, not vinyl singles – showing my age!) on her show. She explained what it was all about and it sounded great – a real change from just soppy love songs for couples.

This idea inspired me to share different kinds of love this February and to make Valentine’s Day inclusive this year. I’ve been thinking about what love is, who in my life I love and why. What makes those people special? We’ve all had a difficult couple of years living with the pandemic and not being able to see loved ones has affected so many people.

As a photographer, I have the privilege of photographing happy moments, whether it’s a new baby, an engagement, a special pet, an occasion, an anniversary or just capturing the latest chapter in a family’s history. Being able to show the love in the room in a portrait is very rewarding for me. This was even more significant in recent times when people could finally get together for portraits, whether for families, babies born during lockdowns, couples celebrating first anniversaries after a scaled back wedding during restrictions. Seeing people spending time together was just lovely.

Those that you love could be your partner, family, best friends, or even your faithful furry friend!

My husband is a very special (and patient!) person. He is very practical, gets on with things that need doing and he does the housework – how great is that? He can fix just about anything. He does little jobs for me at the studio, sorts out my computer issues, is a sounding board for ideas and listens when I need to talk. Every year we come to the studio for portraits, usually as a family, and we always take some portraits of the two of us. They are photos to keep forever, to laugh at when fashions have changed and to remember those moments in our lives (when we both looked a lot younger!).

Now the children are away at university studying and we are ‘empty-nesters’, we have a new love in our house to keep us busy – our kitten, Angus. He’s actually 7 months old now but is still quite small and pretty naughty with it.
We absolutely love him and I always joke that I am a ‘helicopter parent’ because I worry about him being out on his own, mixing with the big cats in the area and being led astray by them. The reality is that he can be seen chasing the big cats out of the garden, climbing the trees and returning home via the garage roof!

I photographed Angus when he was 3 months old because cats grow so quickly and I wanted to remember him when he was a kitten. I love that we have those photos to look back at of ‘our little furry baby’.

What I am really saying is that love in our lives is there in many different ways and is not just for couples. You can celebrate your significant relationships with portraits and Valentine’s is the perfect reason to. I hope you are doing well, staying safe and adapting to this new (hopefully temporary!) way of life.

The studio is temporarily closed at this time and I am working from home, which I don’t find very easy, especially when it’s warm and sunny outside! I’m checking email, dealing with enquiries, speaking to clients, sending out gift vouchers and planning for business as well as doing some practical jobs which have been on my list forever!

I am also looking at what measures and new ways of working I will need to put into place to keep everyone safe when the studio is able to open again.

I am regularly posting on Facebook, so if you are a Facebook user and would like to follow Double Image, click this link and click ‘Like’ and ‘Follow’. You will then be able to see all our up to date news, offers and updates:

It’s really strange not being able to take photos and create memories for our lovely clients and I’m looking forward to welcoming people again at the studio when we can get back to normal.

For enquiries, please email info@doubleimagephotography, text or call me on 07808 620436 or send me a message on Facebook.

Stay safe, stay healthy and enjoy the sunny weather!

Having a studio space at Double Image means we can accommodate larger groups for portraits.  We’ve had 15 in the studio before, although it was a bit of a squeeze! We regularly have groups of 8 – 14 people here.

The most common reason for group portraits is for a gift or celebration – an anniversary, special birthday or a photo of the whole family before children leave home and head off into the big, wide world.

I always think that photographing large groups is a bit like doing a jigsaw.  People need to be posed so everyone can be seen and the structure of the pose builds nicely.

I usually photograph a couple of more formal poses and then some less formal ones with people sitting and kneeling on the floor.  We usually use a white background and suggest casual clothing to give a contemporary feel to the more formal poses.

Most families make the most of the studio time and have photos of individual family groups, grandparents with their grandchildren and the grandchildren together – any mix of shots the group wants really!

My tips for groups thinking about having portraits are think about the feel of the photos and what clothing would work well – smart or casual, colour scheme etc. Special toys or a teddy will help little ones settle in the studio.  Think about using the studio session to get a range of images and think of what you will do with the photos from the shoot.

I received a phone call from a longstanding customer of Double Image for a last minute portrait session. They had a student lodging with them for the last year who was due to return home and they wanted some portraits of their two boys with the lodger as a keepsake for everyone.

I have photographed the boys many times and it’s always fun! We captured images of the three of them together and there were lots of laughs in the studio while we were shooting.  I even took a couple of photos of silly faces shots for something a bit different!

There are many reasons to have professional portraits taken.  They mark a moment in time, create memories for those in the photos and can be passed down through generations to form part of a family’s history.
